The Spielboden was founded in 1981 as an association (or forum for youth and culture). It was founded after long-standing demands from Dornbirn’s young people and cultural workers for a youth center, which culminated in a youth center demonstration in front of Dornbirn’s town hall in 1981. Before the Spielboden association was founded, numerous cultural events had been held under the responsibility of Jeunesse musicale since 1976 on the poorly adapted second floor of the Dornbirn town hall. All these initiatives were finally brought together in the board of the Spielboden association, but remained autonomous . Spielboden developed an excellent reputation as a cultural organizer. The venue relocated in 1987 to a purpose built facility, The assumption is that the gruppe played in the town hall.
